History of Somerset
What I photographed for my independent series is the bridges that connect from Somerset to Fall River. The pictures include the old defunct Brightman St. Bridge, The newer Veteran's Memorial Bridge that replaced the Brightman St. Bridge. And the Braga Bridge that carries the 195 highway traffic between Fall River and Somerset. Something that I didn't know about The Brightman St. Bridge in particular is that there was a bridge before that one called Slade's Ferry Bridge. It carried rail traffic on top and included a swing span to allow river traffic through. It was built in 1875 and removed in 1970. It tells a story about how old decaying bridges get replaced new, big, strong bridges. Picture three in particular shows the location of where the first bridge stood, The Slade's Ferry Bridge.
